Class Information

LHCMAI classes are open to people of all ages and physical condition who have a desire to learn kung fu. Each class lasts up to 2 hours. If you do not think that your youngster can exercise for 2 hours, perhaps it would be better to hold off for a year or two. If you are worried about a pre-existing health condition, please consult your physician before beginning this or any other exercise program. All students are encouraged to train hard, but because we are all individuals with different capabilities, no student should feel any obligation to perform exercises beyond their current conditioning and ability limits. Learning kung fu takes a long time and a lot of personal effort. Students should concentrate on doing the best that they can and not worry about how they are doing compared to anyone else in the class.

In class, students will participate in stretching, strengthening and endurance exercise. Students should wear loose-fitting shirts and pants (white T-shirts and dark colored sweat pants are ok). Comfortable low-cut athletic shoes should be worn. T-shirts and sweatshirts with the LHCMAI logo as well as black kung fu pants are available for purchase. It is a good idea for students to bring a change of clothes and a towel so that they do not get chilled on their way home after class.

Students will first learn stances, kicks, punches and tumbling. They will practice drills to strengthen and condition the limbs. They will practice with partners to analyze force and learn how to project and deflect it. Once the students do well with the fundamentals, they will steadily learn the Northern Shaolin and Choy Lay Fut forms. They will also learn to free-spar (kickbox) and to Lion Dance.

It is our goal that every student who works hard to understand the lessons and participate in the class activities will dramatically improve their health, posture, breathing, balance, coordination, endurance and self-defense skills. We encourage students to take what they learn from this class and practice it every day. Not only in a physical exercise way but also in ways that relate to the other activities of their lives.
